1. Skinning - Use a knife only to start and finish the job. Use your hands to pry and pull off the hide. Leave tallow on (helps keep the hide soft).

2. Curing - Lay hide down flesh side up in a cool dry place. Spread 3-5 lbs. Of table salt on the flesh side. Let sit for 3-4 days until a crust forms and the noticeable weeping stops. If a locker plant is processing it, be sure to request salting and that it be kept cool for you. DO NOT FREEZE. (IF FROZEN THAW AND SALT)

3. Packing - Fold sides toward center and roll up hair side out, keeping salt on the hide. Wrap in paper and put in a cardboard box with the above packing slip filled out completely and legibly. Put only the packing slip in a seal able plastic sandwich bag and place it in the box with your hide. DO NOT PUT HIDE IN A PLASTIC BAG. Lack of air circulation can cause rot. If you are sending multiple boxes, fill out one packing slip for the whole shipment and be sure to label each box with a number. (i.e. 1of3)

4. Shipping - Hides are accepted for leather and hair-on tanning from October 1st to March 1st. We recommend that you ship by UPS, Parcel Post or Truck. In all cases, be sure there's enough paper in the box to absorb any additional dripping. Be sure to write your name, address and if possible, your day-time phone number on the outside of each box.

If you live close to the tannery or are looking to visit Salt Lake City soon, you might consider bringing your hide and delivering it at the tannery. Our 24 hour drop boxes allow for individuals to bring their hides in at any time and deliver them to the tannery at their convenience.
